W+K London is…

…blogging and podcasting. Apparently they’ve been at it for a while now. It’s an interesting and fairly candid look inside part a big ol’ multinational ad agency. Check it out here: Optimism

I was going to review their podcast, but it’s a 40MB+ mixtape with peculiar audio samples sprinkled throughout. I can’t recommend waiting for the download.

Guess I’ll be sticking with the consistently capricious American Copywriter podcast.

As for me, today I have the pleasure of being stuck in Richmond International Airport. Oh well, at least they have free WiFi.

Graphic Resources 4

In a spirit of giving inspired by DesignBum, I’ve decided to offer some of the graphic resources that I’ve found handy over the years. This post marks the fourth entry in a four part series

Some call it the wicked worn look. Others call it machine washed. In the circles I run in, it’s called the distressed look. Each of these four patterns are actually 1-bit TIFF files. Each file can easily be imported into Illustrator or opened in Photoshop and colorized to your liking. Just lay your favorite pattern on top of your existing design, set it to match the background color, and you’re like two seconds from taking your designs from a’ight to tight.

My only request of those who download this artwork: if you use this in any your projects, send me a screenshot, URL, or printed sample.

Enjoy!

My Man Mitch

I’ve been a big fan of Mitch Hedberg for many years. I’ve been a big fan of Jimmy John’s for many years. So I was pleasantly surprised to hear Mitch’s familiar voice come over the speakers while browsing Jimmy’s site in a recent creative meeting. It may just be the false consensus effect, but I think Mitch is—er, was—a spot-on match for JJ’s clientele.

I’m not sure who’s responsible for the radio, but I know Wisconsin’s own Planet Propaganda has some hand in JJ’s brand.

Thanks to an entertaining-yet-unlinkable flash site, I can’t send you directly to the spots. But if you have some time to surf Jimmy John’s dot com, look for “Fun” and you’ll find the ad archives, full of Mitchy goodness.

Graphic Resources 3

In a spirit of giving inspired by DesignBum, I’ve decided to offer some of the graphic resources that I’ve found handy over the years. Over the next week or so (at least until I run out of stuff to give away), you can look forward to free downloads of Illustrator files, images, and textures.

I’ve been using this dummy for a few years to mock up all of my screen printing projects (Fig. 1), and I think it’s time to share the t-shirt lovin’.

Feel free to download this snazzy, completely vectorized, customizable template….my only request of those who use this artwork: if you use this in any your projects, send me a screenshot, URL, or printed sample.

Enjoy!

Urban Photo Safari

If you own a digital camera, live anywhere near Kansas City, and have a little free time this weekend, be sure to check out the 4th annual Urban Photo Safari.

You can find all of the important details here, but here’s the elevator pitch for the impatient: you’re given four hours and a geographic boundary to shoot as many pics as your memory card can hold. Your 10 favorite pics are posted on the Urban Photo Safari website. Once everyone’s photos are posted, you look them over and vote for the 10 best. The photo that gets the most votes wins.

I’ve done it twice now and I’m hooked. It’s a great way to stretch your creative muscles, meet some cool people and see a lot of great photos.

Graphic Resources 2

In a spirit of giving inspired by DesignBum, I’ve decided to offer some of the graphic resources that I’ve found handy over the years. Over the next week or so (at least until I run out of stuff to give away), you can look forward to free downloads of Illustrator files, images, and textures.

Part two is a badge. But it’s not just a simple starburst-style badge, this one has scalloped edges, and those aren’t easy to make. I used Bartleme’s Photoshop tutorial as a starting point and recreated this bad boy with Illustrator’s vectory goodness.

My only request of those who download this artwork: if you use this in any your projects, send me a screenshot, URL, or printed sample.

I’ll set it off with a generic mobile phone I recently created in Illustrator. This is loosely based on the ubiquitous RAZR, and it’s great for mockups, demos, etc.
